Athletics Mission/School Values Statements
Department of Athletics Mission Statement
The Department of Athletics at The Bolles School is committed to be an integral part of the overall educational experience offered by the School to its students. To this end, the paramount function of the Department of Athletics is to fulfill the educational mission of the School through continually striving to enhance the athletic program for our students by:
-
Promoting academic excellence, leadership and community involvement
-
Providing the best environment in terms of staff, facilities and equipment for positive competition against quality opponents
-
Nurturing positive character growth and development by emphasizing the highest values and ideals of the School, including good sportsmanship, personal integrity and fair play
-
Cultivating in students an appreciation of self and of others and their views
-
Developing students' ability to think clearly and make sound judgments on the playing field and in life
-
Attempting to obtain athletic excellence by encouraging students to strive toward their fullest potential
The School offers a comprehensive interscholastic athletic program for both male and female students beginning in Middle School and continuing through Junior Varsity and Varsity programs in Upper School. The administration and staff of the Department of Athletics endeavor to operate its programs with a high degree of competency and professionalism while always respecting the rules and regulations promulgated by the School, the Florida High School Activities Association and the Independent Middle School Conference.
The various varsity programs offer our students the chance to compete on the district, regional and state levels with the opportunity to attain maximum individual and team accolades within a framework of good sportsmanship and fair play. The junior varsity programs provide an arena for positive interscholastic competition, continued participation, honing of fundamental skills and introduction of more complex team tactics and strategies with the opportunity to advance to varsity level play. The Middle School interscholastic athletic program offers our students an opportunity to compete in the Independent Middle School Conference with other private middle schools in the Jacksonville area. The emphasis in middle schools is on participation, development of fundamental skills and basic team concepts. Participation on any Bolles athletic team at any level is a distinctive privilege to be earned, not a universal right. This participation carries with it certain obligations with respect to conduct, sportsmanship and academic performance.
Finally, we sincerely believe that athletic opportunities are a powerful and influential teaching tool. Indeed, many of the lessons learned through participation in athletics enhance the overall educational experience and will serve our students well throughout their adult lives.
The Bolles School Values Statement
The Bolles community respects for the individual. We embrace this philosophy and teach our students that a civilized culture (all that is truly great in human life --in art, in music, in literature, in science and in technology) represents the achievements of honest, thoughtful and often highly learned individuals. The sharing of ideas, ideals and accomplishments with one another brings mutual respect and often mutual advantage. The success of such people develops highly desirable personal values such as generosity, honesty, hard work, willingness to share, high ethical standards and pride in community.
We recognize the unique opportunity we have to encourage moral growth and we believe these values reflect our shared philosophy:
-
To respect the property and opinions of others
-
To take responsibility for our actions
-
To strive to work hard in our quest for physical and mental excellence
-
To be concerned for the good of others, especially those less fortunate than ourselves
-
To take pride in our community and consider civic responsibility a virtue
