Whitehurst Scientists Rumble in Lab
students in lab

There were more seismology lessons at Bolles this week, this time in Lily’s Lab on the Bolles Lower School Whitehurst Campus. Science teacher Andi Oldham led an experiment using corn kernels, a shoe box and a ruler to show how items on the earth’s surface move during an earthquake. After placing the corn in three circles in measured distances away from the “epicenter” atop a cardboard box, students used a ruler to strike the epicenter for several seconds. Afterward, they recorded the distance the kernels moved following the jolts. Students enjoyed whacking the boxes for the prescribed amount of time and seeing how their projections played out. There’s always a fun rumble in the science lab at Bolles!
