Whitehurst Grade 5 Takes Audience on Reflective Journey

Grade 5 students on the Bolles Lower School Whitehurst Campus brought themes of growth and self-discovery to the stage in their production of “The Last Day of Ordinary.”

Inspired by the unnoticed “last times” in life, Whitehurst Campus drama teacher Daniel Austin wrote the play through the lens of exploring the transition from childhood to adolescence. Students examined how different parts of one’s personality evolve—some growing stronger while others fade —shaping identity along the way.

The production emphasized the importance of moments that may feel routine but carry lasting meaning. A highlight came late in the performance during the original song “Ordinary Is Where We Begin,” featuring lyrics by Austin and music by Beth Zerkowski. The students stepped into the audience, creating a shared experience that reinforced the play’s message of connection and reflection.
