Wetzel ’84 to Open “Atmospheric Landscapes”

Bolles alumnus and accomplished artist Dave Wetzel ’84 will open a new exhibition, “Atmospheric Landscapes,” at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum on February 6.

The show features a collection of Wetzel’s oil paintings, most of them depicting the stunning, otherworldly beauty of Alaska, where he has made his home since 1991. The exhibition will run through February 28.

Wetzel, who primarily paints landscapes in impressionist and tonalist styles, began painting at a very young age thanks to the influence of his father, Fred Wetzel, who was a professional wildlife artist and Bolles biology teacher from 1970-1983. The late Jim Smith, a beloved Bolles fine arts teacher, was also one of Wetzel’s most significant mentors and inspirations.
