Upper School Students Take Hands-On Geography Field Trip

On May 13, Bolles AP Human Geography students went on an all-day field trip to Jacksonville University and participated in hands-on geography field work with the JU Department of Sustainability, Geography and Environmental Planning and the St. Johns Riverkeeper.

The students got a tour of the city from the river’s perspective from JU human geography professor Dr. Ray Oldakowski, where they discussed and observed patterns of land use, demographics and sustainable development along the St. Johns River.

Then, the students built vertical oyster gardens with the St. Johns Riverkeeper to help improve water quality and reduce erosion in the river. As a group, they created approximately 30 gardens, which will help seed oyster colonies in key spots along the St. Johns.

Finally, the students had a debriefing and reflection session with JU professor of sustainability, geography and environmental planning Dr. Ashley Johnson. They also heard from recent Bolles alumnus Land Johnson ’23, who is studying geosciences at Florida Atlantic University, about the collegiate field work and career opportunities he is pursuing in geographic information sciences.

Bolles Director of Global Learning and Engagement Allison Chandler joined upper school social studies teachers Dr. Jeff Yeakel and Emily Edmonson in leading the field trip. View more photos from their experience here. #BollesSanJose
