Turner ’03 Visits Shares Journalism Insights with Bugle Staff

Bolles alumna Emily Turner ’03 returned to the Upper School San Jose Campus on October 27 to share insights from her dynamic journalism career with students involved in The Bolles Bugle, the School’s newspaper advised by upper school English teacher Erin Gastaldi.

During her visit, Turner engaged in thoughtful dialogue with Bugle staffers, answering questions about the evolving landscape of journalism, the importance of ethical reporting and her experiences covering major news stories. Students were especially interested in her path from Bolles to broadcast journalism, and Turner offered candid advice about navigating controversial stories, newsroom dynamics and the value of curiosity in the field.

Turner’s journalism career has spanned newsrooms in Mobile, Orlando, Tucson and San Francisco. She has anchored major news programs, hosted the Reebok CrossFit Games Show and currently serves as the 4 p.m. anchor for Action News Jax and an investigative reporter for Cox Media Group.

Turner has earned two Emmy Awards (one of which she brought with her to class that day), two National Gracie Awards and a Regional Murrow Award, and her reporting has covered landmark stories including the Gulf oil spill, the Trayvon Martin and Casey Anthony cases, and wildfires in California.

This opportunity was part of The J. Malcolm Jones Jr. Mentorship Program – a new initiative at The Bolles School named for former Bolles Trustee J. Malcolm Jones Jr. ’71. The program seeks to equip Bolles students to unlock their full potential by connecting them with individuals who will inspire growth, share real-world experience and guide them as they navigate their journey through Bolles and beyond.

The structured mentorship program will launch in the 2026-27 school year. Those interested in participating can learn more and get connected here. #BulldogProud
