“The Music of Movements” Kicks Off Black History Month at Bolles

Juniors and seniors on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus enjoyed a dynamic, musical presentation on February 3 to kick off Black History Month. Bolles Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Twyla Ashman arranged for the students to experience “The Music of Movements” – a powerful program incorporating live music that invites attendees to find their voices and represent their communities.

The artists performed many songs – including “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley, “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke and “A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan – and the group provided historical context and insight about each piece. The performers also expressed how musical elements can underscore a song or movement’s message, using jazz to showcase improvisation in the Civil Rights Movement and variations of “This Land Is Your Land” to demonstrate irony.

Students clapped and sang along to tunes they were familiar with and gained a broader understanding of the role protest songs and anthems can play in mobilizing change. Stay tuned for more Black History Month activities coming this month! #BollesFamily
