Superhero Visitors Bring Phonics to Life for Second Graders
teacher dressed as the hulk presents to students sitting on carpet

Grade 2 students on the Bolles Lower School Whitehurst Campus are getting a heroic dose of phonics review thanks to teacher Teresa Hudson’s imaginative approach. Every other Friday, Hudson transforms into a surprise superhero character, bringing energy and imagination to a special phonics review session.

So far this year, Hudson has appeared as Wonder Woman, the Hulk and Iron Man. Each superhero arrives with a mission: to learn what phonics skills have been taught recently so they can share the knowledge with other superheroes in need. Students eagerly take on the role of expert teachers, explaining concepts and guiding their heroic visitor through the lesson.

“The kids do a great job explaining what our phonics lessons were each week,” Hudson said. “They play along and use their imaginations with me the entire time. That little 10 minutes every other week is such a special time of review for them.”

In the days leading up to each visit, Hudson builds anticipation by including two superhero images in her phonics slides—clues that a visitor is on the way, though the identity remains a surprise until Friday. The activity blends review, storytelling and fun, reinforcing academic content while sparking creativity and joy. With phonics powers activated and imaginations soaring, these Bolles superheroes are ready to take their learning up, up and away!
