Students Explore Biology and Forensics with Digital Microscopes

Bolles upper school students are exploring the microscopic world through dynamic labs, now held within the state-of-the-art facilities of the Frank R. Sanchez & Hope and Dana E. Fender Center for Innovation (Sanchez Fender CFI).

These advanced labs provide an enhanced environment for students to delve into their studies, utilizing digital microscopes, among other technology, to gain deeper insights into complex biological processes and forensic investigations.

Bolles Science Department Chair Nancy Hazzard helped her students use digital microscopes during a biology lab on September 5 as they examined various slides both directly through the microscope and on their connected Surface screens. See video below.

Bolles upper school science teacher Ashley McLeod also used digital microscopes during a hair evidence lab with her forensic science students on September 11. The class analyzed samples of their own hair and documented their “evidence” directly from the microscope projections on their devices into their lab reports.

“It was a fun lab, and the kids really enjoyed seeing all the intricate details of hair and how it can be used as evidence,” McLeod said. “One of the samples was a dog hair, and they will [eventually] have to figure out which sample was [from] the dog and which two samples came from the same person.”

All 10 new labs in the Sanchez Fender CFI underscore Bolles’ commitment to fostering scientific inquiry and innovation, offering students a cutting-edge space to engage in hands-on learning. Discover more about the Sanchez Fender CFI here. #BollesInnovates
