Students Enjoy a Week of French Activities

During National French Week, the Bolles French Club hosted activities on the Upper School San Jose Campus that explored five French-speaking countries: Morocco, Senegal, Haiti, France and Canada. The general student body was invited to participate in campus-wide activities starting November 11.

  • Monday – Morocco
Bulldogs enjoyed Moroccan mint tea during Activities. Those who poured it from high enough won a crêpe coupon to redeem later in the week. Special thanks to senior Nora Bouziane ’25 for lending a hand!

  • Tuesday - Senegal
Students challenged their friends to games of wure/awale in Bolles Hall lobby during Activities and lunch, with winners earning coupons for crêpes. French classes also tried bissap, a Senegalese drink made from hibiscus flowers.

  • Wednesday – Haiti
Bulldogs competed in a chasse au trésor, or a scavenger hunt, to win coupons for crêpes. Those who participated sent pictures of themselves at the last location to claim their prizes.

  • Thursday – France
The French Club sold crêpes during Activities and lunch by the Bent Center patio. Nick Baker ’27 and Siena Barre ’26 were especially helpful! Some French classes also learned a traditional Breton dance from Northwest France.

  • Friday – Canada
The French Club made and served maple syrup candy called tire d’érable, or maple syrup poured over snow.

The activities were led by Bolles French Club president Ella Chan ’25, vice president Neala Klein ’25, secretary Abigail (Melody) Cherry ’27, treasurer Lucas Knapp ’26 and social media manager Hannah Hodges ’27.

A big “merci beaucoup” to Bolles French teachers Sara Phillips-Bourass and Danielle Jones for their implementation of activities on the upper and middle school levels. Jones and Bolles upper school teacher Abby Sander ’09 also had students participate in the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) trivia competition during their class time.
