Sculpture by Bolles Art Teacher Installed in Riverside

A stunning blue stainless steel sculpture by Bolles art instructor Lily Kuonen was recently installed in the Riverside/Brooklyn neighborhood near downtown Jacksonville.

“It has been an exciting process to design, fabricate and install the kinetic sculpture,” Kuonen said.

Called “Blue Crest,” the piece is a collaborative public art undertaking by Kuonen and local artist Jim Benedict. The 700-pound powder-coated aluminum and steel piece has mechanical components and now sits nearly 16 feet high in a public park near the intersection of Forest and Magnolia streets. The piece was commissioned by a significant Florida insurance company with operations in the area.

“’Blue Crest’ features a strong stainless steel uplifting spire, supporting kinetic components of a nested emblematic form of abstracted wings and a protective shield, with references to the insurance brand identify,” the artists explain in their statement. “Each of the dynamic blue forms are balanced to move passively with shifts in wind and atmosphere.”
