Internationally admired choreographer Derek Mitchell wrapped up a three-day workshop with Bolles dancers on September 17, concluding an inspiring opportunity for Bolles dancers to learn key moves from the Broadway mega-hit, “Hamilton.”
Mitchell is the resident choreographer for “Hamilton: The Musical” and is choreographer for “So You Think You Can Dance.” He has numerous credits in television, film, stage, commercials, music videos and concerts and has been teaching for more than 20 years. Mitchell was nominated three consecutive years for The Capezio A.C.E. Award for Choreographic Excellence.
During his time in Jacksonville, Mitchell worked with company dancers in Lynch Theater on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus September 15-16 and will teach dancers a piece from “Hamilton” in Parker Auditorium on the Middle School Bartram Campus September 17. He helped students learn numbers from the acclaimed Broadway show and gain new – unmatched – dance experience. He also answered students questions during a casual conversation in Parker Auditorium in the last hour of his visit.
Students will soon have the opportunity to enjoy “Hamilton” again next year. FSCJ Artist Series announced that “Hamilton: An American Musical" will be coming to Jacksonville during the 2019-2020 season. The musical made its Broadway debut in August 2015 and won 11 Tony awards in 2016. Tickets to the show still are a hot commodity and tickets are a premium. The show also is being staged in London and Chicago.
