Mermaid Sculpture Anchors Bolles Deck the Chairs Exhibit

A whimsical mermaid design by Bolles junior Melody Cherry ’27 is the centerpiece of this year’s Deck the Chairs student exhibit, themed around ocean conservation. Cherry, an Honors 3D art student known for her costume creations and cosplay performances, collaborated with upper school sculpture teacher Tiffany Gonzalez to bring her vision to life.

Forty-seven Sculpture students contributed to the installation, crafting ceramic corals and constructing an upcycled grotto from donated broken tents and floating debris. The soft sculpture mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” reflects Cherry’s theatrical flair—she recently starred as Mother Abbess in Bolles’ production of “The Sound of Music.”

The exhibit highlights sustainability and creativity, transforming discarded materials into art while raising awareness about marine preservation. Deck the Chairs will run through January 1, 2026, at the Seawalk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach. Visit the organization’s website for more information. #BollesArts
