Lower, Middle School Robotics Teams Score at States
robotics team

This past weekend, Bolles had four teams compete in the FIRST Lego League Challenge (FLLC) Florida State Invitational Championship. The teams from the Bolles Lower School Whitehurst campus were SUP! (Savage Unknown Power) and Team Gigaflops, the Grade 4 and 5 teams respectively. The Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus teams were the Orange Hounds and Blue Bulldogs. Two teams – SUP! And the Blue Bulldogs – won state championship awards.

All teams submitted their three robot-game runs last week along with their project and robot design videos. Friday night, all four teams got together for the opening ceremony and enjoyed food and fellowship and allowed the Whitehurst teams to see what the middle school robotics room looks like.

Saturday morning, all teams participated in web conference judging calls. Teams statewide were organized into six “lanes.” After the first judging sessions, the top two teams from each lane in each of the judging categories—Core Values, Robot Design and Innovation Project – were invited for call-back judging sessions. SUP! was invited to call-backs for Core Values and Robot Design and Bolles Blue Bulldogs was invited back for Robot Design. When the final results were announced, the Bolles Blue Bulldog team won third place in Robot Design. SUP! did not win in either of their two call-back categories. However, they did win the Rising All-Star Award, which is given to a team that performed well in many categories and is typically a rookie or second year team. Judges select Rising All-Star winners because they are excited about their potential and “expect great things from this team in the future.”

Final Robot Game Performance scores were released May 25 for the Florida FLLC state championship tournament. The top score at the tournament was 495 points. Out of 50 teams, Bolles teams faired well:

SUP! -  330pts (12th place)

Team Gigaflops – 315pts (17th place)

Bolles Blue Bulldogs – 240pts (37th place)

Bolles Orange Hounds – 235pts (39th place)

Congratulations to all four teams for qualifying for the state invitational championship and a special congratulations to SUP! and the Blue Bulldogs for their state championship awards.
