Kaplan ’95 Brings Real-World Medicine to Anatomy Class

Bolles alumnus Dr. Kevin Kaplan ’95, a leading orthopedic surgeon and head team physician for the Jacksonville Jaguars, returned to Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus on October 30 to serve as a guest lecturer for students taking Anatomy with Assistant Head of School Piper Moyer-Shad ’91. Kaplan gave students an inside look at the diagnosis and treatment of common sports injuries, including ACL tears, rotator cuff injuries and fractures.

He shared real surgical footage and explained the procedures he performs to treat these injuries, offering students a rare and engaging glimpse into the operating room. With support from Mark Holder of Arthrex, Kaplan also set up interactive lab stations where students scoped green peppers and explored surgical techniques using real medical tools.

A board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Kaplan practices at Orthopedic Specialists of Jacksonville. He graduated summa cum laude from Tulane University and earned his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases and a sports medicine fellowship at the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles. There, he assisted in the care of professional teams including the Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, Ducks and Sparks. Kaplan has authored more than 20 orthopedic publications, presented nationally and is recognized for his expertise in treating complex shoulder, knee and cartilage injuries.

This opportunity was part of The J. Malcolm Jones Jr. Mentorship Program – a new initiative at The Bolles School named for former Bolles Trustee J. Malcolm Jones Jr. ’71. The program seeks to equip Bolles students to unlock their full potential by connecting them with individuals who will inspire growth, share real-world experience and guide them as they navigate their journey through Bolles and beyond.
