James Ponti Encourages PVB Readers and Writers

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author James Ponti visited the Bolles Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus on September 28 to speak with Grade 4 and 5 students as part of his Florida tour for his newest series, “The Sherlock Society.”

Ponti, who grew up in Atlantic Beach, is the author of four middle grade book series, including “City Spies” and “The Sherlock Society.” His novels have sold more than 1 million copies, been translated into 16 languages and appeared on more than 70 state award lists. The first book in “The Sherlock Society” is included on Florida’s Sunshine State Young Readers Award list.

During his visit, Ponti shared that he was a reluctant reader as a child but decided in fifth grade that he wanted to become a writer. His interest in writing eventually helped him develop an appreciation for reading, particularly as he discovered that great writers need to be good readers.

Ponti encouraged students to keep reading regardless of how quickly or slowly they read and to pursue activities they enjoy even when they may not feel particularly good at them. He emphasized the importance of sticking with an interest, practicing and continuing to grow.

Before becoming an author, Ponti spent 30 years in television as a writer and producer, with credits for Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, PBS, History Channel, Golf Channel and NBC Sports. He is also a two-time Edgar Award nominee, winning in 2018 for his middle grade novel “Vanished!” #BollesPVB
