Bolles Chinese language students Alex Hastings ’19 and Jack Qu ’20 traveled to Shanghai China this summer to work as intern for Stephen Schroeder ’12. Schroeder works with Atlanta-based real estate firm Cortland Partners as the firm’s Global Processing Improvement Manager and was a former student of Bolles Chinese teacher, Chengmei Rothschild.

Rothschild helped the students connect with Schroeder and design a project for the summer internship.

Qu said one of the highlights of the experience was spending two days at a wood processing plant in Jinan.

“Not only did we have the opportunity to see the elegantly modern and impressive layout of the factory and witness the process through which raw lumber is transformed into finished wood for a contemporary home, we gained insight into how Cortland Partners works with their factories and companies in China,” Qu said.

The summer internship was an opportunity to glean a hands-on perspective in international business.

The students were thankful for their Bolles connection. Schroeder has visited Chinese language classes on campus in year’s past, and also has invited Bolles Chinese exchange students to visit the company during their trip abroad.

“This will be important for our career path moving forward,” Qu said. “A heartfelt thanks to our Bolles alumnus for giving us this amazing opportunity to experience the real world.”
