Grade 8 Celebrates Shakespeare Day with Friendly Rivalry

Grade 8 students on the Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus stepped into a world of epic drama and quick-witted prose during the annual Shakespeare Day celebration held March 5. Students arrived in creative period costumes and spent the day immersed in performances, games and spirited competition between House Capulet and House Montague.

Middle School English teachers Deborah Carney, Tim Creter and Morgan Teichert led the festivities, opening the afternoon with a series of theatrical showcases in Parker Auditorium. Students performed scenes from classics such as “Romeo & Juliet” and “King Henry VIII,” played piano pieces, staged a Shakespeare-themed insult game show, presented original theatrical works and competed in trivia.

Lady Carney also shared highlights from her Shakespeare-themed travels to Verona and England two summers ago, made possible through her Ottenstroer Fellowship. She returned with authentic Capulet and Montague crests purchased at the historic Globe Theatre and used some photos from her trip as backdrops during the performances.

To cap off the day, students divided into red-clad Capulets and blue-wearing Montagues and headed to Conroy Gymnasium for games and lighthearted contests. The friendly rivalry carried through the remainder of the day as both houses battled for bragging rights.
