Whitehurst Grade 1 teachers Christine Burkett and Meredith Thorpe gathered their students for a special lesson about the Lunar New Year on January 19.

Bulldog parents Sam Au Yeung and Monica Au Yeung joined their daughter in sharing the traditions and meaning behind the Lunar New Year through an interactive presentation guided by a colorful pop-up book written in Chinese.

The class learned about the Chinese dishes typically served to celebrate the holiday, traditional decorations and the three main wishes for the Lunar New Year – good fortune, good health and a long life. The students answered questions from the Au Yeungs to help reinforce the lessons taught during their visit and then enjoyed homemade rice cakes for a snack.
