French Club Partakes in Cajun Traditions on Fat Tuesday
The Bolles French Club threw a Mardi Gras party on March 4, complete with king cake and a courir de Mardi Gras on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus.
Bolles upper school French teacher Sara Phillips-Bourass said courir is a tradition from Cajun country where revelers go from door to door collecting ingredients for a gumbo. The last ingredient is chicken, which must be chased and caught live!
Phillips-Bourass said the tradition is specific to the French-speaking areas of Louisiana and dates back to medieval European festivals.
French Club members Christian Perez ’27 and Xavier Sohovich ’26 volunteered to be the Mardi Gras chickens in two separate races, dressing in costume for their peers to chase around campus. Sohovich caught Perez in the first round by the Frank R. Sanchez & Hope and Dana E. Fender Center for Innovation, and Ethan Bathala ’26 caught Sohovich on the River Campus when it was his turn to don the chicken costume.
Special thanks to Phillips-Bourass and Bolles French teacher Danielle Jones for hosting this event! Laissez les bons temps rouler! #BollesGlobal
