Fifth Graders Learn Chinese Basics from Upper School Students

Bolles upper school students studying Chinese stopped by the Bolles Lower School Whitehurst Campus January 15 to teach fifth graders about the upcoming Lunar New Year as well as basic numbers and words in Chinese.

The 17 upper school students, currently taking Honors 3 through AP Chinese, broke into three groups to work with each Grade 5 class simultaneously. In addition to teaching the young Bulldogs how to introduce themselves and the characters and pronunciation of numbers one through 10, the upper school students shared more about the Lunar New Year and why they chose to study Chinese. One group also learned to sing “Happy Birthday” in Chinese and serenaded their teacher, Sue Numbers.

Thank you to Bolles Chinese teacher Chengmei Rothschild and her upper school students who took the time to teach their younger peers! View pictures from the lessons in our online photo gallery. #BollesGlobal

Is your fifth grader interested in learning about the Chinese language and culture? All current Bolles Grade 5 students are invited to the Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus for a Chinese New Year Day Camp. Throughout the day, students will learn Chinese calligraphy, jump rope, play children’s games and songs, make crafts like Chinese lanterns and masks, and learn culinary skills – leading to a delectable meal of Chinese spring rolls! In addition, we will stage a Chinese treasure hunt to help the Grade 5 students become familiar with the Bartram Campus. The camp is Saturday, February 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $90 for the day and includes camp fee, snacks, lunch and party favors. Register your fifth grader HERE. Deadline for registration is January 22. For more information, contact Ms. Chengmei Rothschild at RothschildL@bolles.org.
