Fifth Graders Explore Japanese Calligraphy in Virtual Workshop

Fifth graders on the Bolles Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus took part in a virtual calligraphy workshop December 16 with the Japan Society in New York City. The session was an extension of lower school librarian and information specialist Christina Karvounis’ 2024 Ottenstroer Fellowship, which focuses on global storytelling and learning in the campus library.

Students learned about the history and practice of Japanese calligraphy, including the meditative nature of brushstrokes and ink on washi paper. Using traditional brushes and ink, they practiced creating characters while exploring the calming rhythm of the art form.

Karvounis drew inspiration from her fellowship experience, where she studied Sumi-e painting, an ink painting technique that originated in China and spread across East Asia. The workshop gave students a chance to try the art form with guidance from Japan Society experts and encouragement from Karvounis.

The activity reflects Bolles’ commitment to global perspectives and hands-on learning that connects students to diverse cultures and traditions. View more photos in our online gallery. #BollesPVB
