Bolles alumnus Griffin “Bear” Fender ’21 was named Comeback Athlete of the Year by the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association following his senior season with the Stetson University Men’s Rowing program.

Fender was in a serious car accident in March 2025, spending three weeks in the hospital due to a collapsed lung and enduring an intensive recovery process. However, he was able to return to training shortly after and his comeback to the sport was highlighted by a resounding win in the Men's Varsity 2- event at the prestigious Dad Vail regatta.

Stetson Head Coach Jamie Francis said of Fender, “Bear’s journey this season is a testament to what is possible through relentless perseverance and an indomitable spirit. He has inspired his teammates, coaches and competitors alike, not simply because he returned but because of how he returned: with focus, humility and the quiet confidence of someone who knows exactly what they’ve overcome.”
