Chinese New Year Gala, State Competition Draw Hundreds to Bolles

The Bolles School welcomed more than 500 guests February 27-28 for the Chinese New Year Gala and the 20th Annual Chinese State Competition, both organized by Bolles Chinese teacher Chengmei Rothschild.

The weekend also featured a major recognition for Bolles Upper School Head Moya Marks, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Chinese Education from the Florida Chinese Teachers Association (FCTA) for her 20 years of dedication and contributions in Florida.

Rothschild noted that this year’s turnout, energy and community response made it one of the most memorable weekends in the competition’s history.

The weekend opened Friday on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus with student performances, a Chinese night market-style dinner, cultural activities and a fireworks finale. Watch the Bolles students' dragon dance here. Families, faculty and visiting schools praised the hospitality, organization and atmosphere Rothschild and her team created.

Competition events continued Saturday as students from across the state participated in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Cultural Jeopardy categories. This year marked the third time Bolles has hosted the statewide event. Bolles also established both the inaugural and 10th Annual Chinese State Competitions.

The two‑day program was supported by students, faculty, staff, the Parent Association and community partners, including Callaway Blue Spring Water, which donated all the bottled water needed throughout the weekend.

The School extends its appreciation to all who contributed to the event’s success. View more pictures from the event in our online photo gallery. #BollesGlobal
