The Bolles Chinese Club hosted Chinese Week on the Upper School San Jose Campus January 17-20 in anticipation of the Lunar New Year. These upper school students planned fun activities to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit and educate their classmates about Chinese culture.

Chinese Club students kicked off the week by preparing and selling Chinese food – including spring rolls, stir-fried rice and bubble tea – to raise funds for an orphanage in Hebei Province, China. The next day, the club led a Tai-Chi exercise in the Reflection Garden before school, and the following day, students participated in Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting and painting.

The Chinese Club then visited the Lower School Whitehurst Campus for flag on Friday to teach the young Bulldogs about the Lunar New Year before heading back to the San Jose Campus for hacky sack and Chinese-style jump rope. Upper school students also answered trivia questions for prizes and competed in a ping pong tournament throughout Chinese Week.

Bolles upper school advisor and Chinese teacher Chengmei Rothschild said her students took the Lunar New Year celebrations into the weekend as they performed at the Jacksonville Chinese Association’s New Year’s Gala at the University of North Florida on January 21. Twenty Chinese language students and students from China joined forces to deliver a fantastic dance and song routine in front of hundreds of audience members from the Jacksonville community.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for Bolles Chinese students to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with the city and show off their talent through Chinese song and dance,” said Rothschild.

Abby Bradley ’25 said she is grateful to Rothschild and the Jacksonville Chinese Association “for giving us this awesome experience.”
