The Bolles Black Student Union hosted its first-ever Bolles Black History Experience event February 25 on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus.

Julian Morris ’20 began the program by singing the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Sairah O’Brian ’21 and Dyasia Ford ’22 recited Maya Angelou’s poem, “Still I Rise.” Group  leaders also presented its inaugural Ashman Brewer Appreciation Award to Twyla Ashman and Ryan Brewer, faculty members who have demonstrated a dedication to the minority voice at Bolles.

“We hope this will be a tradition here at Bolles,” said Kenny Sogbesan ’20, Bolles’ first black Student Council president and the 2018 MLK Leader of Tomorrow. Twin brother, Taiwo Sogbesan ‘20, is the BSU President and the 2019 MLK Leader of Tomorrow.

Event organizers also shared a presentation highlighting black history, as well as Bolles’ black history, which showcased several students who are making an impact on the community today.
