Bolles HSU Hosts Vibrant Hispanic Heritage Week

The Bolles Hispanic Student Union (HSU) persisted through a week interrupted by Hurricane Milton to host a vibrant Hispanic Heritage Week October 7-11 on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus.

On Monday, the HSU hosted a Spanish Spelling Bee competition in Lynch Theater during Activities, with participants winning prizes from upper school Spanish teachers Araceli Crotty, Carrie Ezzell and Adriana Stam.

The next day, students set up soccer on the Bolles Hall lawn and sold colorful bracelets through a partnership with The Pulsera Project. This initiative buys hand-woven pulseras from Central American artisans and then partners with student groups to sell them through U.S. schools. The Pulsera Project has provided sustainable, fair trade employment and expanded economic opportunities for hundreds of artists since 2009. Led by seniors Sofia Brieva ’25 and Emma Vasquez ’25, the HSU sold more than $500 to support Central American artists between their efforts at the upper school and the Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus.

To cap off the week, the HSU arranged for El Chamo Criollo, a food truck specializing in Venezuelan and Latin Caribbean cuisine, to provide its offerings on the San Jose Campus during Activities and both lunches. View pictures from Hispanic Heritage Week here.
