As a kick off to National Library Week, the Bolles Middle School Bartram Campus hosted middle-grade book author Allison Varnes for a special convocation and day of workshops.

Varnes’ book, “Property of the Rebel Librarian,” was published by Penguin Random House books this fall. Varnes is a former teacher and has a PhD in education from the University of Tennessee. Her book is about 12-year-old June Harper, whose parents discover what they “deem an inappropriate library book.” During the convocation, Varnes spoke on the perils of literary censorship and freedom of speech.

Throughout the day, Varnes met with English classes to talk about creative writing and storytelling.

Varnes’ visit was facilitated by Bartram Teacher-Librarian and Information Specialist Jaime Sanborn.
