Advanced Art Students Tour Local Galleries and Museums

Bolles upper school fine arts teachers Tiffany Gonzalez and Lily Kuonen took their advanced art students on a field trip to tour local galleries and museums November 20.

Kuonen said the field trip was organized for students taking AP 2D Design, AP Drawing, AP 3D Design, Honors 2D and Honors 3D.

“It was a day designed to inform, inspire and ignite our artists and their portfolio work,” Kuonen said.

The students stopped by the Moving the Margins Gallery, a nonprofit art gallery that amplifies marginalized voices and regional artists of color. The organization also offers responsible stipends, residencies and support for artists to produce the exhibition artwork. The students saw Marcus William's Exhibition: "Un-American Gods."

The group also spent time at the Cummer Museum, a large nonprofit arts institution with an extensive permanent collection (about 5,000 artworks), programming, workshops and a historically significant garden space they steward. Kuonen said they visited “Spirit in the Land,” a traveling exhibition, originally featured at the Nasher Museum at Duke University, organized by their curators: Trevor Schoonmaker, Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans. This exhibition has traveled throughout the regional Southeast from North Carolina to Florida.

The Bulldogs made an additional stop at three commercial galleries in San Marco square: Exhibit A, The Vault Gallery and Stellers Gallery. Exhibit A is curated and run by artist, Mico Fuentes. The Vault and Stellers feature a diverse inventory of paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture with rostered artists. These galleries specialize in catering to private collections, corporate collections, clubs and interior design firms. They also offer services like consulting, placement, custom framing, art restoration and commissions.
