Tina Ganger-Smith
Tennis Director/Girls' Head Coach
Tina Ganger-Smith first joined the Bolles tennis program in 1983. In her time at Bolles, she has guided the girls' team to three state titles (2004, 2005, 2007), 19 district titles, 19 regional titles, and four state runners-up titles. Ganger-Smith has earned several coach-of-the-year honors, including the FHSAA Class 2A Dairy Farmers Coach-of-the-Year Award in 2005 and 2007.
Ganger-Smith began her professional teaching career in 1979 and has held a variety of positions in tennis. She served as Tennis Director at Epping Forest Yacht Club for 11 years, served as a United States Tennis Association High Performance Coach for Zone Team Florida, she directed the Northeast Florida Player Development Program, served four years on the Junior Competitive Council for Florida, and has coached numerous sectional and national ranked players, as well as professional players.
In the summer of 2006, Ganger-Smith served as the Team Florida coach at the United States Tennis Association's 64th Annual Girls 18 National Team Championships. The tournament, held at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, California, included 16 teams with some of the top 17-18 year old players in the country. Ganger-Smith's Florida squad placed fourth in the tournament and one of the players earned an overall sportsmanship award.
Ganger-Smith also directs the Bolles community after-school program, introducing the sport to and developing young athletes ages five and up. Annually, the top ranked players in the state and nation from Northeast Florida train in this program. Many players from the program receive scholarships from NCAA Division I colleges and go on to successful collegiate careers.
Ganger-Smith earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and kinesiology from Pepperdine University in her home state of California. She played number one singles and doubles for the Waves' tennis team. She still holds the school record for most matches won in a season and helped her team rank 12th nationally as a senior.
She and her husband, David, have been married for 11 years. Her son Zachary, a 2004 Bolles graduate, is a senior at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, playing number one singles and doubles for the Utes' tennis team.
John Tsumas
Boys' Head Coach
John Tsumas joined the Bolles tennis program in 2003, becoming the boys' team head coach in 2006. In 2004, Tsumas helped the boys' and girls' varsity teams to their first state titles. In his first season as the boys' head coach, Tsumas guided the boys to district, region, and state titles. In 2007, the boys finished as state runners-up, claiming region and district titles along the way.
Tsumas moved to Jacksonville from Utah where he was the head coach of the University of Utah women's tennis team for 15 years. Three of his teams earned top 25 national rankings. During the 1990-91 season, Tsumas earned the Regional Coach of the Year award and was a finalist for the ITA National Coach of the Year. He coached several players to NCAA All-America honors in his time at Utah.
Prior to collegiate coaching, Tsumas served as head professional at the Canyon Racquet Club in Utah and Junior Academy director for nationally ranked athletes.
As a player, Tsumas earned an ATP tour ranking in the summers of 1980-82 in both singles and doubles. He posted several wins over top-100 players in singles as well as several top-ten doubles teams. During his collegiate career, he posted wins over the first, second, third and tenth ranked singles players including wins over the 1983 NCAA singles runner-up and the 1980 singles semifinalist. In doubles, Tsumas teamed with Greg Holmes to upset the 1982 NCAA doubles champions at the National ITA Indoor Championships. During his collegiate career, he played in the NCAA Championships three times. Prior to Utah, Tsumas held a national ranking of ninth in the Boys' 16s and posted wins over six super national singles champions.
Tsumas studied health education at Utah and enjoys nature photography as a hobby. His work has been presented in galleries across Utah, California, and Florida.
