All crews row to finals at annual State Championship Regatta
Bolles Crew entered into the 43rd annual FSRA State Championship Regatta with high hopes and met the coach’s expectations by making it into the finals in every event they entered.
Our first heat of the day, girl’s freshman 8, proved to be extremely exciting as the top 2 crews in each heat would advance to the final. The Bolles freshman entry, coxswain Alora Clark, stroke Taylor Hughes, Megan Bennett (7), Jennifer Margettes (6), Grace Dahlstrom (5), Natalie Falbo (4), Mya Nguyen (3), Camielle McCutcheon (2) and bow Lily Herman were in a dog fight with Plant High for that second place finish. Bolles fell just short by less than a second and would have to compete in the repechage later in the day for a second chance to get into the final. The girls rowed well and made into the finals.
The girl’s lightweight 4, with Maude Magee (cox), Annie Ungrady (stroke), Sarah Dibble (3), Emily Vandroff (2) and Marta Trippe (bow) were in our second race of the day and rowed well in their heat, making it directly to finals. Our other lightweight crew, the boy’s lightweight 8, also had an excellent heat and made it straight to finals. The boat was Jake Mendelson (cox), Justin Viviano (stroke), Conor White (7), David Rice (6), Chris Connolly (5), Griffin McCutcheon (4), Jared McNeil (3), Bryan Smith (2) and Walker Wulbern (bow).
Our girl’s 2nd Varsity 4 also had to work hard to get into the finals, having to row in a repechage later in the day. Alora Clark (cox), Savannah Wood (stroke), Hayley McIntosh (3), Anne-Marie Clegg (2) and Therese Miranda (bow) showed a lot of heart and made it into the finals on Sunday. The other girl’s 4, the 1st varsity boat, had to row in a heat and a semi final due to the amount of entries in that particular race. 22 crews were battling for 6 places in the final race. Coxswain Stephanie DiLoreto, stroke Christina Lambiase, Melissa Chavez (3), Mimi Southall (2) and bow Alyssa Lang cruised through the heat, winning by a large margin to get into the semi final, and then early on Sunday morning rowed good enough to make it into the final.
The finals on Sunday combined all the fastest crews in the state, club or high school, for some extremely competitive racing. The large multi-high school teams and 6A schools dominated the majority of the racing, but Bolles held their own, with all boats finishing no worse that 4th for high schools. The men’s quad, Tyler Franke, Dylan Gall, Eric Eriksen and Kevin Rice, were one of 3 crews that qualified for the SRA national regatta. The other crews that qualified are the girl’s 1V4 and girl’s lightweight 4

Bolles Crew takes 2nd place at the City Championships
Coming into the final races of the day, it was basically a dead heat between Bolles and Stanton for second place at the championship regatta. The last two races of the day would determine who would be runners up to a very powerful Episcopal Crew. The women’s and men’s novice 4+ races had to cross the finish line in front of Stanton. Both crews did just that and more, finishing in first place in both races, with a very close, less than a second victory over Stanton’s men’s novice four boat. The crew, who had never raced in this particular line-up before, was William Leeser (cox), Chris Ragsdale (stroke), Sammy Honig (3), Brennen Lutz (2) and Matt Taylor (bow). The women’s novice four, who was equally as instrumental in our finish in the points race, was Stephanie DiLoreto (cox), Sharon Lee (stroke), Therese Miranda (3), Camielle McCutcheon (2) and Cozy Ruan (bow). These same four girls were also involved in the women’s novice 8 win earlier in the day!
The men’s lightweight 8, who rowed in the varsity 8 category, had an impressive row, hanging with a very good Episcopal 8 right until the very end, only falling behind in the last 300 meters of the 1500 meter race. The women’s lightweight 4+, Maude Magee (cox), Annie Ungrady (stroke), Sarah Dibble (3), Emily Vandroff (2), and Marta Trippe (bow) had an extremely impressive row to a first place finish, which is a great prelude to their upcoming run at a state championship.
Our crews are now focusing on the state championship regatta and are looking forward to bringing home the gold!

Bolles Takes 2nd at Jacksonville Invitational Regatta
The girl’s varsity 8 started the day looking strong, finishing well in front of their competition in their heat, finishing in first place. The boy’s lightweight crew, entered in the varsity 8 category held their own against bigger varsity crews, finishing 3rd overall and only 6 seconds behind the winning crew from Episcopal. The men’s lightweight came back later in the day and won the event they were put together for in impressive fashion, continuing their undefeated streak.
Both the 3rd 8’s did well, winning gold in their races. The girl’s boat, comprised of coxswain Alora Clark, stroke Taylor Hughes, Megan Bennett (7), Jennifer Margettes (6), Grace Dahlstrom (5), Sharon Lee (4), Mya Nguyen (3), Camielle McCutcheon (2) and bow Lily Herman raced to gold in that race, and with the exception of one rower, turned around and rowed a second race immediately after due to a schedule change. That boat, with Natalie Falbo instead of Sharon Lee, raced to a second place finish in the women’s freshman 8. The men’s 3rd 8 A entry, which also brought home the gold, was Maude Magee (cox), Jim Trippe (stroke), Eric Eriksen (7), Carl Holland (6), Matthew Silverstein (5), Jared Lenner (4), Chris Ragsdale (3), Sung Su Kim (2), and Matt Taylor (bow). This crew has won at the last 2 regattas and has hopes of bringing home a city championship!
Two races were cancelled at the end of the day due to weather. The women’s and men’s 3rd 4 and Varsity 4 will have to wait until the city championship regatta on April 19 to show us what they’ve got before we head to states the following weekend.

Bolles Crew finishes at the top amongst all high schools at OARS Invitational
Crews endured a strong head wind all day long at Turkey Lake Park in Orlando, making the course a bit choppy and the times a bit longer. Our boats battled in every race, and the end result put Bolles in 8th place out of 28 teams, beating all other high school entered, only falling behind 7 of the largest clubs in Florida.

The Men’s Lightweight 8 posted the 3rd fastest time of any crew, winning their heat and finishing 2nd overall to Sarasota Crew (their Varsity 8 was the other boat faster on the day). This fast line-up includes Justin Viviano (stroke), Conor White (7), David Rice (6), Chris Connolly (5), Griffin McCutcheon (4), Jared McNeil (3), Bryan Smith (2), Walker Wulbern (bow) and coxswain Jake Mendelson. We are expecting great things from this crew for the rest of the season.
Another boat to watch, the Women’s Varsity 4, finished 8th out of 24 entries and only lost to Lake Brantley and Tampa Prep of the high school entries. Christina Lambiase (stroke), Melissa Chavez (3), Mimi Southall (2), Alyssa Lang (bow) and coxswain Stephanie DiLoreto came back, hanging in 5th place for much of the race until they started making a strong move in the last 500 meters to finish 2nd in their heat.
The Men’s 3rd 8, coxed by Ed Avery, was involved in a close race down the entire course and pulled out in front in the last 100 meters to finish first overall in their race. Jim Trippe (stroke), Ben Donovan (7), Kevin Rice (6), Matthew Silverstein (5), Max Foster (4), Chris Ragsdale (3), Sung Su Kim (2) and bow seat Sam Buchwalter were in the gold medal winning boat.

Bolles defeats Stanton at its annual Invitational Regatta
By Ted Riedeburg
Coach Ted was seen jumping up and down on the dock overlooking the finish line after the first event of the day unfolded in front of his eyes. The Bolles Men's Varsity 8 came in first place in their heat, beating Stanton in the process. If that wasn't enough, in the next race of the day, the Women's Varsity 8 placed third in a straight to final rac, capturing the bronze medal and also beating Stanton to the finish of the 1500 meter course. This marked the first time that Bolles beat Stanton's varsity 8's in the same regatta! The excitement filled the air around the Bolles tent and trailer, as time after time, Bolles was crossing the finish line in front of Stanton.

Bolles continued to do well in all events throughout the day, and the Women's Varsity 4 ended it on an extremely high note. The boat comprised of Christina Lambiase (stroke), Melissa Chavez (3), Mimi Southall (2) and Alyssa Lang (bow) along with coxswain Stephanie DiLoreto finished first in their heat, and second overall, only .06 seconds behind first place finisher Lake Brantley. This impressive row gave us all a sneak preview of what this V4 might be able to accomplish this year at the state championship regatta.
For the first time in recent memory, Bolles finished the day in front of Stanton for team points and finished 3rd overall. Keep it going Bolles Crew!

Bolles Indoor Rowing Shines at the 25th Annual Southern Sprints Regatta
The selected members of Bolles Crew were prepared for battle amongst the 20 high school and club teams entered in the regatta. Most of the team trained through the winter months just to be able to compete in this race, and the training proved successful as Bolles had an outstanding day at the event.
Some of our middle school rowers started the day off well, including Grace Dahlstrom who raced her way to a second place finish in the 13 year old girl’s event. This was a four minute race for distance, and Grace compiled 986 in the timeframe.
Chris Ragsdale avenged his 9th place finish from last year, improving his time by 14 seconds and winning the men’s 1000 meter coxswain race. Sarah Dibble also took home gold with an impressive row in the women’s coxswain event.
Much of the excitement for Bolles landed on the shoulders of two freshman rowers, Conor White and Taylor Hughes. Taylor, in her first ever indoor race, rowed her way to a silver medal in the lightweight novice women’s 2K – and did it with a head cold! In possibly the most exciting race of the day, Conor White kept a steady pace and passed Victor De-Zarraga, the same Belen Jesuit Prep star he beat the previous year in the Boy’s 13 year old event. With about 800 meters left in the 2K event, Conor moved ahead by “open water” on the digital screen and held on, earning him a first place medal.
In an emotional effort, the Girl’s Relay team had an inspired performance, earning a bronze medal, which was the first time Bolles had ever medaled in a relay event. The 3rd place team was; Annie Ungrady, Anne-Marie Clegg, Christina Lambiase and Mimi Southall.
Coach Ted Riedeburg also had success, beating all men entered in the master’s category. His time of 6:29.1 currently ranks him 5th amongst Americans for his age and 28th in the world in his category. Later on, Coach Ted competed in the Open Heavy Men’s 500 meter dash and took home a bronze medal.

The Bolles rowing team ended the fall season in a fantastic way, coming home with five medaling crews. The men's lightweight 4+ and the women's lightweight 8 both pulled to first place finishes in their events. The men's lightweight 4+ included senior Justin Viviano, freshman Conor White, senior Rocky Wirth, junior Chris Connolly, and eighth grade coxswain Jake Mendelson. The women's lightweight 8 included with sophomore Annie Ungrady, sophomore Sarah Dibble, junior Alyssa Lang, senior Kaitlin Sparks, sophomore Emily Vandroff, eighth grader Lily Herman, sophomore Jessica Franke, junior Marta Trippe, and sophomore coxswain Stephanie DiLoreto. The women's youth 8 and women's lightweight 4+ both took home a silver medal and the men's youth 8 A-boat took home a bronze in their events. The men's 8, women's lightweight 4+ and men's lightweight 4+ not only did well in their events, but were able to beat local power, Stanton, in the process! Everyone is excited with the success we had here and are looking forward to more of the same in the spring.

Women's Double Pulls to Silver at Gatorhead Regatta
By Ted Riedeburg
The Bolles women's rowing team started the day a little shaky to say the least, with the second varsity beating the first boat in the 5000 meter race. But two girls out of that first boat came back later in the day to take 2 nd in the women's double (2X) event. Melissa Chavez (10) and Alyssa Lang (11) represented Bolles in the race and marked the first ever Bolles entry in a women's double event.
The boy's 8's rowed well, with the A boat holding their fifth position through the race, and the B boat rowing past Gainesville Area Rowing's B entry to place seventh overall.
Bolles finished fourth in team points out of nine teams entered in the regatta.
Bolles Women's 8 have good showing at First Coast Head Race
By Ted Riedeburg

At the team's first head race of the season, the Bolles women's team performed extremely well. The women's varsity A boat came in fifth place overall, and was the top finishing high school team. Only four boats from three club teams, OARS, GAR, and TAC were better. The women's varsity B boat finished eighth and rowed very well, beating local teams Episcopal and Jacksonville Rowing Club in the process. Both of our girl's varsity boats beat Episcopal's varsity entry! The novice girls also did well in their first ever race, finishing fourth just behind Stanton 's novice girls over the 5000 meter course.
The men are continuing to improve and look to have a better showing at our next regatta in Gainesville. The men's varsity A boat finished 11th overall, just behind local rival Stanton. The boy's B and C boats finished in opposite order due to three missed buoy penalties, which added 1:30 to their time. The novice men finished 7th in their first race of the year.
Bolles Leads the Way Again at Row for the Cure
By Ted Riedeburg

The fourth annual Row for the Cure was held at the Jacksonville Rowing Club in Arlington on September 29. Head coach Ted Riedeburg started the event in 2004 at Bolles in memory of his mother Judy, who passed away from breast cancer in 2001. Bolles, together with the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Jacksonville Rowing Club, has made this a first class event. This year Bolles, the Jacksonville Rowing Club, Stanton, and Episcopal, were able to raise over $20,000 - a new record!

There were many other firsts at this event as well, the biggest addition being a memory tree which was planted at the site. Pink ribbons adorned the tree with loved ones names printed on them. Riedeburg dug the hole and planted the tree while parents, rowers, and survivors looked on. This tree will symbolize hope for everyone for years to come and is visible from the river so crews will be able to enjoy it as they row by. This new tradition will rotate to different rowing clubs each year.

Over the last few years, the rower who was able to bring in the most donations has been recognized, but this year a new idea was added to the mix. A plaque, which will be hung at the participant's school, was awarded. This year's winner was Bolles' own Jake Mendelson, an eighth grade coxswain who, with no help from his parents, was able to raise an incredible $3,000 for the cause!
Each crew was literally pulling to eliminate breast cancer as a life threatening disease. We should all be proud of their accomplishments.
