Visiting Artist At Bolles
Gema Alava-Crisostomo, originally fom Madrid, is at Bolles this week as an artist-in-residence in the visual arts department. Presently an artist in New York City, Gema specializes in installation art and has exhibited and lectured at leading museums in the U.S. and Europe.
Don Zentz, director of Fine & Performing Arts, reports that Gema's deep insight and philosophic perspective on human experience and sensitivities is greatly reflected in her art. Says Zentz, "In her very first session with students, it was special to observe our kids as they came to realize the intricacies and feelings of life her that simple-seeming art represents. The true meaning of art is always beneath the surface. For us in today's society, we live so much of the time on the surface - failing to uncover anything of greater significance. Gema, and her art, reminds us to look deeper and find greater human connection and understanding."

Gema's visit is made possible through the Herb Peyton Endowment for the Fine Arts at Bolles. She will be presenting an art talk on Tuesday, January 8th at 7:30 PM in the Gooding Gallery for adults in our community. A student art talk/reception will be held on Wednesday, January 9th at 10:15 AM in the Gooding Gallery.
