Middle School Celebrates Earth Day

2008 Earth Day

Bolles middle school students turned green on the Bartram Campus on April 23 and enjoyed the Earth Day Celebration. Led by Environmental Club sponsors Susan Castelli, Carol Kline, and Don Mancosh the campus was transformed into an Earth Day “carnival” of sorts by having many fun and educational things planned for the students in several areas.

The Warren-Ropp Courtyard was full of activity with poster displays the sixth grade students had completed on environmental projects, a display and fishing game by the Jacksonville Riverkeepers, an interactive computer display by CSX, a hybrid car and solar models display, Earth Pledges, Animal Lover's Display, and an Environmental Club Display. Led by Michael Fritton, the Drama students became Earth Day mimes and performed throughout the courtyard dressed in green with painted faces and some wore flowering hats. In the computer lab, Gloria Wood was showcasing the environmental games designed by some of the students. These high-tech games captured their attention quickly and taught important lessons at the same time. One game alone created by Cameron McLauchlan '12 and Jake Mendelson '12 and programmed to a Dance Dance Revolution pad by Robbie Bridgewater '12, included 46 facts about recycling. Wood says this is just one of seven games completed by the students that she is submitting for the “Future Game Designers International Competition.” The library was not the usual quiet zone either because this is where many students were busy coloring and writing environmental messages on Publix paper grocery bags. These friendly reminders will be given back to area Publix stores to be used and given to customers. All students could join in the fun and think about saving the Earth for the day, and hopefully for a lifetime, by wearing green shirts.
