Marijke Boers is selected to Theater Jax Musical
On March 30, middle school chorus member Marijke Boers participated in auditions for the musical The Secret Garden at Theatre Jacksonville, where she won the part of Mary Lennox. This is the same role that earned actress Daisy Eagan a Tony Award on Broadway in 1991. There were approximately 30 young singer/actors competing for the coveted role.
The open audition requirements included singing a solo selection from a musical of choice and a cold reading. Among those auditioning were students from La Villa School of the Arts, Douglas Anderson, and the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus. Marijke will be rehearsing with fellow cast members throughout the months of April and May.
The Secret Garden received the 1991 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actress, and Best Scenic Design. It also garnered the 1991 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Orchestration, and Outstanding Set Design.
Theatre Jacksonville will present The Secret Garden on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. on June 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21. There will be Thursday evening shows at 7:30 p.m. on June 12 and 19, and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on June 8 and 15.
