Elizabeth Smith Selected for Morehead-Cain Scholarship
Bolles senior Elizabeth Smith has been awarded the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarship programs in the country. The Morehead-Cain Foundation awards a four-year undergraduate scholarship to attract outstanding, well-rounded students to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Smith is one of 79 students in the United States to be named Morehead-Cain Scholars in 2008 and the only student from the state of Florida to earn the honor.
The Morehead-Cain Foundation currently awards full scholarships each year to high school students in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain who exhibit outstanding leadership in the areas of academics, physical vigor, community service, and moral force of character.
This year's winners were selected through a nomination and interview process that began last fall. More than 1,500 high school seniors were nominated by their high schools or applied for the Morehead-Cain.
From those nominees, the foundation and regional committees chose 140 finalists: 65 in-state, 71 out-of-state, and four from Great Britain. The process concluded with interviews of the finalists in Chapel Hill March 3 and March 4. The Canadian scholars were chosen in a separate process.
Among Smith's many achievements, she was recently named a National Merit Finalist, is a member of the National Honor Society, and she helped the Bolles girls' varsity soccer team to the Florida Class 3-A state title in 2008.
The Morehead-Cain provides a full four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that includes an annual stipend that covers full tuition and all other normal expenses, including student fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, travel, and miscellaneous expenses; laptop computers for all entering freshmen; a fully funded, four-year Summer Enrichment Program, beginning the summer before the freshman year; and funding to pursue a gap year before starting college.
The total value of the scholarship over the four years is approximately $80,000 for in-state residents and $140,000 for out-of-state residents.
