Bolles Rowing Helps Raise over $100,000 through Row for the Cure

On Saturday, September 27, history was made at the 2008 Jacksonville Row for the Cure. The event produced donations of $102,800 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to assist in the fight against breast cancer. The total is the largest amount raised by a single local Row for the Cure since the event began 15 years ago in cities throughout the nation.

2008 Row for the Cure

The Jacksonville Row for the Cure was started five years ago by Bolles rowing head coach Ted Riedeburg. Riedeburg started the event in memory of his mother, who passed away from breast cancer in 2001. It became a way for Riedeburg to heal and help spread awareness to the community, especially to the youth in hopes of preventing the disease altogether through awareness and education of a healthy lifestyle. What started as a 10,000 meter rowing piece on the indoor rower at Bolles has blossomed into a day dedicated to inspiring survivors of the disease, as well as family and friends of those who lost their fight against cancer.

Now held at the Jacksonville Rowing Club on a beautiful and protected creek, the event includes a Memory Tree that is planted at a different site each year, raffles, silent auctions, demonstrations, and spectator boat rides where people can get a closer look while crews pull together in memory and in honor of loved ones.

A loud and special "Thanks!" to Bolles Crew Mom Sandy Silverstein, the 2008 Chair of the local Row for the Cure, for all of her hard work, endless hours and dedication for the cause, and all of the wonderful additions to the event to be enjoyed for years to come.

Once again, Bolles student Jake Mendelson ’12 led the way among the youth participants with over $3000 in donations. Way to go Jake!
