Florida Day 2010

Florida Day 2010

Fourth grade students on the Whitehurst Campus hosted the annual Florida Day on Friday, May 14.  After studying the past, present, and future of Florida, the students each portrayed a famous Floridian or character and performed a short vignette.  Florida Day subjects included Juan Ponce de Leon, Henry Flagler, Southern Belles, Jimmy Buffett, Everglades Park Rangers, scuba divers, Walt Disney, hurricane experts, Calusa Indians, astronauts and much more.

Throughout the morning, several Bolles faculty and staff members, students from the Whitehurst and San Jose Campuses, and friends and family toured the fourth grade classrooms to enjoy Florida Day.  The fourth graders did a wonderful job with this tradition, providing interesting information and delicious Florida-themed treats to the fascinated guests.

Laurie Braddock, current computer lab instructor and former fourth grade teacher on the Whitehurst Campus, sent the following note of appreciation to current Whitehurst fourth grade faculty Kathy Haueisen and Caryn Canfield following the 2010 Florida Day.

“As a veteran ‘Florida Day’ aficionado, I want to congratulate the two of you and the whole fourth grade on a job very well done.  After doing it for 12 years, I know how much work it takes to get it done, and you both did a fabulous job of energizing the students, and it was obvious to all that they were very proud of their efforts.

When I left fourth grade, I was afraid ‘Florida Day’ might fall by the wayside without teachers who were passionate about it and willing to work so hard for one day as a goal to bring it all together.  I need not worry with the two of you at the helm.  I still believe the results of inquiry-based learning and the collaborative efforts of the students are worth the effort.  I always love to see the older students come through and remember fondly the roles they played in fourth grade on Florida Day.  I really enjoy how you have introduced some new characters that I never did…the Everglades Park Rangers, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, the hurricane expert, the deep sea fisherman, Julia Tuttle, and Jimmy Buffet.

I love the fact that you and the students embraced technology and used the tools on the computer to enhance the learning process throughout the year. Super congratulations to all of you. It was a great success! I am proud to be your fellow teacher.

Fondly, Laurie”
