Bolles Crew Dedicates the “Rae and Ed Stopyra”
On Thursday, October 30, the crew program dedicated a new rowing shell, the “Rae and Ed Stopyra.” The ceremony began in the area adjacent to the Independent Life Music Building on the San Jose Campus with crew members, their parents, members of the Bolles Board of Trustees, and members of Bolles’ faculty and staff in attendance.
Bolles crew head coach Ted Riedeburg commented on the bright orange boat, to be used by the girls’ varsity 8. President and Head of School John E. Trainer, Jr., Ph.D. then said a few words about the Stopyras and their lasting impact on the School. Ed Stopyra, who retired from Bolles in 2004 after 34 years of dedicated service, offered his thanks and reminisced about meeting with the group of parents that initiated the founding of Bolles’ crew program.
Ed and his son David Stopyra ’02 then poured champagne over the bow of the boat to officially complete the dedication. The girls’ varsity 8 rowers ended the celebration with a short row in the St. Johns River as the sun set in the background.
