Bolles Caps Undefeated Season with 44-7 Win
By Helene Vickers
The Bolles Bulldogs middle school football team ended its season on October 23 with a crushing 44-7 defeat of host St. Johns Country Day School. In addition to the rousing win, it was great to have Daniel Fritton and Steve Schroeder back on the field after being sidelined by injuries this year.
The Bulldogs began the game on defense but quickly forced the Spartans to punt. Cam McCurry returned the ball to the one-yard line setting up 1 st and goal for the 'Dogs. Four plays and two penalties later, Rob Kelley reached the end zone and a pass from Hayden Hurst to Luke Viering capped the extra point to put Bolles up 8-0 with 3:53 to go in the first quarter.
Once again the 'Dogs forced the Spartans to go three and out. The ensuing punt set Bolles up at the St. Johns 48-yard line. Four plays later, the Bulldogs reached the end zone again, this time on a 9-yard run by Jeremy Wannamaker. The point after was successfully completed by Hurst to lift the 'Dogs up 16-0 with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter.
Bolles was not content to let the opening period of the ballgame go by without another score as Wannamaker recovered a Spartan fumble at their 48 and returned it for the touchdown. The extra point was no good leaving the score 22-0 with 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The lone St. Johns score came in the opening minutes of the second quarter despite some gritty defense from the 'Dogs. The Spartans began the drive at their own 37-yard line and ran it in four plays later. The kick for the extra point was good, putting the score at 22-7 in favor of Bolles with 6:25 remaining in the half.
Colby Peters came into the game at quarterback for the Bulldogs and promptly moved the 'Dogs down the field for a touchdown. This score, with 4:42 to go in the second quarter, came from Rob Kelley and the extra point was effectively taken care of by Sam Kelley to make it 30-7.
Bolles rounded out the first half of the game with one more touchdown, this one aided by Matt Morris whose two big runs set the 'Dogs up at the Spartan 15-yard line. Craig Walker ran the ball for the touchdown and the point after to put Bolles up 38-7.
Connor Kaegi came in at quarterback to start the second half and marched the Bulldogs down the field for their final score. The drive took 14 plays and was capped with a touchdown by David Wilf, making it 44-7 with 1:44 to go in the third quarter.
