Academic Programs

Bolles Summer Session 2008

Course Offerings

The Bolles Summer Session offers students a variety of programs for academic credit, review, and enrichment. Students may take courses for academic credit in Foundations in Studio Art, Driver’s Education, and Life Management. There are also review courses offered in Study Skills and English.

Academic Credit

Foundations in Studio Art
1/2 credit
Grades: Rising 9 – 12
Schedule: June 9 – June 26,
8 a.m. – 1 p.m., (Mon. – Thurs.)

Cost: $400 Materials fee: $35

Since this course is a prerequisite for any studio visual arts course (ceramics, drawing, painting, watercolor, photography), students may accelerate their course work in the Fine Arts by taking this course in the summer. In this course, composition, color theory, perspective, and scale are studied as the basis for work in all art media. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects are assigned. Lecture and textbook readings on art history and aesthetics relevant to current class work are included. This course is also available to students from other schools.

Driver’s Education
1/2 credit

Driving Session II: July 7 – July 17, (Mon. – Thurs.)

Cost: $390

This course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of actual driving time, and 12 hours of “in-car” observation. The first two weeks will consist of classroom instruction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All students must attend this segment to comply with state of Florida requirements. The Drug, Alcohol, Traffic Education Course (DATE) that is required by the state of Florida prior to obtaining any Florida driver’s license is conducted during the first four hours of the course. Before the student’s actual driving session, the student must have at least a restricted license.
Within each driving session, there will be driving groups that will drive for an hour and a half each day for the two-week period. Similar driving experience will help determine the composition of each group. Students successfully completing this course will receive a Bolles certificate that may qualify them for an insurance discount.

Life Management Skills

Please note that each session is limited to 30 students, on a first come, first served basis.

Cost: $440

To provide more flexibility in their academic schedules, students may take this required course designed to introduce and develop essential life skills. The topics covered include communication skills, decision-making, peer pressure, drug education, and stress management. In each of the sessions, there will be a community service trip which may occur outside of the 8 a.m.-12 p.m. time frame.

Review Programs

Study Skills Review
Grades: Rising 7 – 9
Schedule: June 9 – 26, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.,
(Mon. – Thurs.)

Cost: $330
This course, required of all middle school students who receive a grade below C- for the year in any academic subject, is designed to motivate students through a complete review of study skills. In addition to covering key techniques such as reading comprehension, time management, note-taking, and test preparation, the course is content specific, with review work in each of the disciplines, depending on the composition of the class.
English
Grades: Rising 10 – 12
Schedule: June 9 – July 17, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.,
(Mon. – Thurs.)
Note: No Class on July 4.

Cost: $530
This course is required of all upper school students who receive a grade below C- for the year in English and must be completed with a passing grade before advancing to the next level in the fall. The course, designed to ensure that students are adequately prepared for the next course in the curriculum, includes intensive review of essential skills, with emphasis placed on the writing process.

Advanced Placement Institute
July 7 –11, 14–18 and 21–25, 2008

THE INTRODUCTORY INSTITUTES are designed for teachers who are teaching AP courses for the first time or have less than two years experience. This institute will help teachers to identify and select students for course participation. Curriculum development will be emphasized with guidance in effective organization and pacing. An in-depth understanding of AP test construction and grading will be offered.

The Faculty:
The Bolles School is a nationally recognized college preparatory school and a leading proponent of Advanced Placement. The Advanced Placement Institute Faculty are well established and offer extensive experience in Advanced Placement. They have served as readers for the College Board and as faculty of Advanced Placement in their respective schools.

Purpose:
The Advanced Placement Institutes are designed to aid the professional development of secondary Advanced Placement (AP) teachers throughout the Southeast. The introductory and advanced programs of instruction presented by the faculty will help AP teachers plan and implement their AP programs more effectively.

Teaching Method:
The workshops are designed to promote interaction among the AP teachers. This open forum encourages participants to work through similar problems and concerns.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
All workshops will be offered on the BOLLES SAN JOSE CAMPUS, 7400 SAN JOSE BLVD.No housing is included with registration. A list of hotels is available here.

TRANSPORTATION:
Jacksonville is served by all major transportation systems including Greyhound, Amtrak and the Jacksonville International Airport (JIA). We do not offer shuttle service therefore; you will to need to provide your own transportation during the week of the workshop.


FEES:
The $500 per person registration fee for the five-day Advanced Placement workshops covers the cost of instruction, College Board Advanced Placement packets and other training materials, as well as access to academic and recreational resources. Lunch is included. Textbooks, which may be required for some courses, are not included in the fees. Additional lab fees are $30.00 for Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Studio Art and Spanish. All fees include lunch each class day. Participants may wish to contact their local school districts or their regional College Board Office for information concerning scholarships. You are not registered until we receive your $50 nonrefundable deposit.


REGISTRATION AND FEE PAYMENT:
To reserve a space in a workshop, complete the application and send it with a $50 non-refundable deposit to the address shown. Registration is complete only if the tuition balance is received prior to June 1, 2008. All checks should be made payable to The Bolles School AP Summer Institute. As space is limited in each program, enrollment preference will be given to the earliest applicants. Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Check-in and classes for all courses will be on the BOLLES SAN JOSE CAMPUS, 7400 SAN JOSE BLVD..

FLORIDA PARTNERSHIP:
All workshop fees will be paid through scholarships funded by the College Board Partnership for Florida Public School Teachers on a priority basis. You are not registered until we receive your $50 nonrefundable deposit.

NOTE: The scholarship will pay for tuition and up to $500 for travel as well as a $250 personal stipend upon the completion of the five day course.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
All cancellations must be made prior to June 1, 2008. Bolles reserves the right to cancel any course due to insufficient enrollment or for any other reason.

Ponte Vedra Beach Campus Bookworm Camp

Art Olympics
June 16 - 20 and/or June 23 - 27
Teacher: Mrs. Jeanette Edwards Tuition: $150 per session

Rising 1st – 3rd graders 9 a.m. – Noon Rising 4th – 5th graders 1 – 4 p.m.
*Each week of camp will be unique so that students may attend either weekly session or both.
Campers will travel from country to country, experiencing the art from around the world in the Art Olympics. They will enjoy the study of several “gold medal” artists and will participate in a “marathon” of skills and imagination, including drawing, painting, clay, weaving, and mixed media techniques. A triathlon of creativity, competition, and fun are planned for Bookworm Art Olympians.

International Readers’ Theater
July 7 - 11

Rising 2nd–5th graders 1 – 4 p.m.
Class size: 20
International folk tales offer a rich heritage of colorful language and universal knowledge just right for lively dramatization. Readers’ Theater promotes all language arts skills, especially reading comprehension, since lines are not memorized but read with fluency and expression. The art of readers’ theater will be incorporated with the making of basic scenery, props, and simple costumes. Our stories will come to life for an audience on the fina day of camp.

Knights, Princesses, Castles, & Dragons
(A Reading and Writing Adventure)

Reading together we’ll explore fiction and non-fiction books that will carry our “band of merry travelers” back to the Age of Chivalry. We’ll make simple costumes, build castles, make a dragon puppet, and write creative stories about our exciting “once upon a time” adventure.

Reader Rockets

Soar to great heights with Reader Rockets camp. Your child will enjoy a week of reviewing the foundation skills of reading with phonics games, comprehension and vocabulary building lessons, and many engaging small group activities that will help instill the love of reading.

Mini Math Olympiads

Rising 3rd – 5th graders 9 a.m. – Noon OR 1 – 4 p.m.

Let’s celebrate the spirit of the Olympics with some challenging math problems, games, and competitions. Campers will have the opportunity to work collaboratively and individually while exploring a variety of math concepts in fun and engaging activities. By the end of the week, you will feel like a math champion!

Writers’ Workshop

Write, illustrate, and create your own hardcover book! Campers will explore a variety of ways to celebrate their writing while exploring the process of journaling and the stages of the writing process.

Day Camp

Day camp is for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade in the fall of 2008. Campers meet on the Bolles Lower School Whitehurst Campus and are grouped into dens according to age and grade level. Campers may register for one or all sessions. Camp activities include swimming, arts and crafts, various sports, archery, double-dog challenge, and other activities planned by the directors. Our waterfront activities on the St. Johns River include any combination of canoeing, kayaking, boat riding, and tubing. Various special events are planned as well. All campers should bring or wear a bathing suit to camp every day. Play clothes that are compatible with the spills, dust, and fun of a day of camp are suggested, and tennis shoes with white soles are required for play on our tennis courts.

Day camp meets Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

There is no need to pack a lunch or a snack, as children are served a delicious lunch and, weather permitting, will be served a snow-cone every afternoon. Both morning and afternoon extended day care are available at an additional cost.

Teen camp is designed for campers entering seventh and eighth grade. Teen camp provides exciting activities that will challenge the energies of this age group. This fantastic camp is a great way for teens to get out of the house and meet new friends. In addition to offering fun-filled days of canoeing, kayaking, boating, swimming, sports, and arts and crafts, our teens will enjoy fun field trips to the movies, bowling, and more. Ultimately, our goal is to send your sons and daughters home with smiles on their faces, excited about participating again the next day.

Teen camp meets Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Extended day care is available at an additional cost.

The Bolles School admits students of any race, color, gender, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities made available to students at the School.

General Information
1. Daily Schedule: All camp programs begin at 9 a.m. Please be prompt. Day Camp ends at 3:15 p.m. and Teen Camp ends at 3:30 p.m. Drop off and pick up your child in front of his/her den.

2. Camp Tuition: Camp tuition varies according to the program you choose. A non-refundable deposit of $200 per student per camp is required for registration. Payment in full is due two weeks prior to the first day of camp.

3. Conditions: The camp reserves the right to dismiss any camper, without refund, whose conduct is detrimental to other campers.

4. A camp shirt will be given to each camper.

5. Please: No IPODS, cell phones, jewelry, toys, computer games, or other valuables are to be brought to camp. Bolles Day Camp cannot be responsible for lost or broken items.

6. Dress: Campers are urged to wear cool, comfortable clothes, tennis shoes, and socks. Bathing suits and towels are needed. Please label all items.

Extended Day Care
This program is designed for working parents and is available from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m.
Extended day is available by session. (No drop-ins or occasional care.)
The program consists of quiet time activities and games and is supervised by members of the camp staff.
The cost is $170 per session full time; $85 per session a.m. only; and $105 per session p.m. only.

I am very excited that it is camp time again. So grab your binoculars and get ready for the hunt. Theguides are ready to lead us into the wild, as “DreamMakers” celebrates this years theme, “On Safari”. So, grab your hat and climb aboard as we explore the wilderness with drama, music,dance, and the arts!

Join us for the night time encampment or just come and join the expedition for the day. Either way wewill be creating, playing, performing, and having fun as we go On Safari.See you at Camp, and thanksfor taking the time to Dream with us!

P.S. Space is very limited for our overnight sessions. Here is this year’s registration policy

1 All fees must be paid in full at the Bolles Finance Center prior to camp for your child to be registered. We cannot accept credit/debit cards. Cash or Personal Checks only, please.
2 There will be no registrations taken by phone.
3 Overnight campers will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
4 Registration will begin no earlier than May 12 at 8:30 a.m. in the Finance Center.

Dear Parents:
As Bolles continues to grow and expand on our Middle School Bartram Campus, DreamMakers Camp finds itself challenged to offer our usual camp experience. We’re up to the challenge and, as they say, “The show MUST go on!” Due to the removal of the pool, we now offer water games that include Water Balloon Toss, Sprinkler Play, and other wet and wonderful fun!

Our overnight bed space is limited to the first 30 campers who sign up, with additional campers added from a waiting list as space allows.

DAY CAMP
Day campers arrive at the Bartram Campus (2264 Bartram Road) at 8:45 a.m., have a day full of the arts and are picked up at 4 p.m. each day. Don’t forget your swimsuit!
Cost: $325 (per session) Lunch included
Our schedule is very demanding as we work toward our Friday showcases. Each morning we work with our talented professionals. In the afternoon, you may choose from our artistic menu and have your choices served in two 1 1/2-hour workshops!

SLEEP-OVER CAMP
After each day of rehearsal and fun, we say goodbye to the day and extended day campers and start our evening of camping fun. Camp games, “geriatric” bingo, scavenger hunts, “Drive-in” movies, and talent shows make the “sleep-over” the total camp experience.
Cost: $475 (per session)
All meals and room included

HOUSING AND MEALS
All of our meals will be served cafeteria-style. If a sleep-over roommate is not requested, one will be provided. This year our performances will be Friday afternoon on the Bartram Campus.
Adult supervisors and trained counselors will serve as our 24 hour-a-day “Moms & Dads.

Camp Instructors

Mike Boswell
Head Coach, The Bolles School
Coach Boswell graduated from the University of North Florida and was an infielder in the Chicago Cubs organization. As a coach, he guided Englewood High school to a state title in 1999 and earned the FACA Coach of the Year award. He is in his fifth year as the Bulldogs head coach.

Matt Denmark
Assistant Coach, The Bolles School
Coach Denmark graduated from the University of North Florida and served as a head coach for Providence and Episcopal High Schools in Jacksonville. He begins his tenth year of coaching at The Bolles School and is the infield instructor for the Bulldogs.

Taylor Cobb
Assistant Coach, The Bolles School
Coach Cobb graduated from Bolles in 2001 and was named the Florida Times-Union Player of the Year. After gradutaion from the University of Central Florida, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He is in his second year as a pitching coach for the Dogs.

Joey Hudson
Middle School Head Coach, The Bolles School
Coach Hudson graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic College, where he played outfield for the Sailfish. He is in his fifth year as the head coach of the middle school program.

Rickey Barnes
JV Head Coach, The Bolles School
Coach Barnes graduated from Mandarin High School in 2003 and is completing his undergraduate studies at the University of North Florida. He has coached football and baseball at the middle school level and is in his first year of leading the Bolles JV baseball program.

John Newman
Camp Co-ordinator, The Bolles School
Coach Newman graduated from The Bolles School in 1986 and played in three Final Four championships as a centerfielder for the Dogs. During his 14 years of coaching Bolles baseball, he helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2002 3A state championship.

Enjoy an actionpacked week of individual and group instruction in the basic fundamentals of football.
You will be training at one of the finest facilities in Jacksonville, under a talented staff of instructors dedicated to making each student

Students will be organized into groups for drills by age and position. All skills will be covered through a NON-CONTACT method of instruction.

Camp Philosophy:

Each session of the Bolles Basketball Camp will provide five days of instruction in the fundamentals of basketball. The camp will be broken down into
a series of different stations where the campers learn offensive and defensive fundamentals including shooting, passing, defensive stance, and rebounding. The camp will also consist of skill challenges, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 team play. All campers will be grouped according to age and ability.

Camp Instructors:

Kelly Stevenson
Varsity Girls’ Basketball, Bolles
Kelly Stevenson is in her second year of coaching basketball at Bolles.A graduate of Nease High School, as a senior she helped the Panthers to a state title as Most Valuable Player in the tournament. Prior to Bolles, she was director of women’s basketball operations at UNC Charlotte, helping the 49ers win the Atlantic 10 Conference title last season. In 2004-05, she was an assistant coach at Furman University. Coach Stevenson is a graduate of the University
of Florida, and was a member of the Gators women’s basketball team and was a three-time Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll selection. She was the first-ever player to sign with the Jacksonville University women’s basketball team in 1999.

Sean Mullings
Varsity Boys’ Basketball, Bolles
Sean Mullings is in his second year of coaching basketball at Bolles. He has played professionally in England and coached the Brookdale Pro-Am basketball team. Prior to Bolles, Mullings served as head coach for both girls’ varsity volleyball and girls’ varsity basketball at Grandview Prep School, in Boca Raton, FL. He played NCAA Division I basketball for the Long Island University Blackbirds and the NCAA Division II C.W. Post Pioneers, where he participated in the NCAA Division II national tournament. Mullings attended Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY, where he lettered in basketball, volleyball, and track & field. While in high school, Coach Mullings played volleyball in the Empire State Games and the Junior Olympics, and was ranked 75th in Hoop Scoop Magazine’s top high school seniors in the entire city.

Bolles Fitness Camp 2008

June 9-13 and June 16-20
Monday - Friday
9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
A Day Camp for students entering Grades 4 through 12

Fitness Camp for Kids
Hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, running, weight lifting, swimming, Tae Bo, nutrition education, and professional evaluations of body composition, cardio, and endurance.

IT’S TIME TO GET BACK TO THE BASICS!

With a focus on fun, the activities will concentrate on cardio, strength, flexibility, endurance, and learning about cool foods and snacks that are actually good for you! We will lift weights in the Bolles weight room, go mountain biking and hiking at Hanna Park, kayaking in the St. Johns River, running on the Bolles track, and much, much more.
Kids Camp Cost: $320 per week
Includes Lunch, Snacks,& Special Water Bottle.

On June 9 and June 16 from 9-9:15 a.m. there will be a mandatory parent meeting in the Lynch Theater.
Daily drop-off and pick-up are in front of the Lynch Theater.

Fitness for Mom & Dad

It’s time to get away from the computer and back to basics. This session will focus on fun, while activities will focus on cardio, strength, flexibility, endurance and learning cool foods and snacks. Activites: biking, climbing, swimming, field trips, hiking, kayaking, weight training, outdoors, recipes and healthful cooking, body composition monitoring and general fitness counseling.
