In the sixth inning of yesterday’s softball game vs. Episcopal, a huge two-out, bases clearing double by Gina Maiolo gave the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead. Leah Jimenez scored Gina with her third hit of the game, and then Abby Brantley slammed the door by shutting the Eagles out over the final two innings for a 9-7 victory. Brantley finished the game with nine K’s. McKenzie Wilson chipped in a hit, a key stolen base, and several fine defensive plays. Gina Lambiase lined a couple of hits, and Emily Johns smacked three hits, including a triple and an RBI single. Great job, girls!
Softball Report:
Heading into the final week of the season, the softball team has a record of 7-3 and is riding a three-game winning streak. This year’s team is loaded with 7th graders who have meshed well with a handful of veteran 8th grade players.
Early in the season, Lauren Beames anchored the offense, driving in several keys runs. Soon, Emily Johns heated up, smashing a couple of homers along the way, and Leah Jimenez joined the wrecking crew, bopping a couple of her own four-baggers.
On the mound for just about every game has been Abby Brantley who is doing an excellent job. We’ve been very good on defense overall. Emily Sprague has emerged as a quick, sure-handed third baseman. McKenzie Wilson is playing dynamite at shortstop, and Gina Maiolo has been prowling centerfield like a cheetah on the hunt.
We have a terrific platoon at second base with Nicole Santeiro and Carly Maiolo sharing duties there. Sarah Bates and Lily Whitehouse have consistently made contact at the plate, with Sarah even slamming a grand salami in a recent romp over Hendricks Day School.
Two of our losses were nail-biting, one-run, last-inning dramas which we’re hoping to avenge in next week’s tournament. Our final home game of the season is scheduled for this Friday at 4:30 pm—come out and support the team!
The baseball team shook off the spring break rust by making some BIG pitches, BIG defensive plays, and BIG hits at the right times to beat Mandarin Christian by the score of 9 to 1 yesterday. Best of luck at continuing the winning ways today for an important game versus Arlington Country Day here at Bartram!
