What is Zero Hour and when does it occur?
Zero Hour is a significant value added benefit of the Bolles education in the middle and upper schools. This block of time in the morning before classes begin provides an opportunity for students to receive immediate help in any subject area, an uninterrupted block of time for academic assistance and/or individual research or simply a chance to interact with friends before the academic day. Additionally, Zero Hour offers a parent an excellent opportunity to meet with a teacher, advisor or counselor in order to solve a problem together. Select upper school campus facilities are open for student use at 7:15 a.m. (7:30 a.m. at the middle school), including the dining halls and libraries for research and/or study.
How many days are in the schedule rotation?
Why is there a late start every Wednesday?
Late starts at the middle and upper schools each Wednesday serve two main purposes. The first is that by starting later on Wednesdays, we hope to allow students an opportunity to get more sleep in the middle of the week and enjoy a less stressful start to the day. The second purpose is that the late starts allow us to hold faculty meetings, collaboration sessions, and professional development before school when there are fewer scheduling conflicts.
How early can students arrive at school?
The lower school morning Extended Day program will continue to begin at 7:15 a.m., and all lower school students may access their classrooms at 8 a.m.
Middle and upper school students can continue to arrive before Zero Hour. Middle school students are asked not to arrive before 7:30 a.m. and should report to the cafeteria or library prior to Zero Hour. The Bent Center Canteen, Verlander Dining Hall, and Swisher Library are open for upper school students starting at 7:30 a.m.

How is the extended activities period used?
We continue to utilize these times for special speakers and programs as well as honors convocations and pep rallies. It also minimizes the need for disruptive special schedules throughout the year. The longer block of time provides more time for clubs and advisories to meet as well as opportunities for morning meetings, off campus field trips, and peer-mentoring. We also can use the time as an extension of Zero Hour prior to the end of quarter and in preparation for exams.
When do athletic practices take place?
Do middle school students travel to the San Jose Campus for Upper School classes like Geometry?
No. In order to help middle school students be more efficient with their time, Bolles offers sections of these courses (examples include Geometry, ESL, Dance) as needed on the middle school campus. This cuts down on time lost traveling between campuses and enables all middle school students to participate in middle school athletics if they so choose.
