In March, any boarder may submit an application to serve as a prefect for the next academic year. All applicants undergo a panel interview with dorm moms and graduating prefects. Nominations are made by senior srefects to dorm moms based on interview, discipline record, and positive involvement in the boarding community at various events and with all boarders throughout the year. Discussion follows nominations and, if necessary, a vote is taken to arrive at mutual assent.

In April, new prefects train for evening prefect duties and attend a workshop with the Upper School Honor Council. In May, new prefects begin serving during evening study hall. Over the summer, prefects participate in a summer reading symposium via online submissions. In August, prefects arrive five days before other boarders to attend the Prefect Training and Leadership Retreat. There is no cost for these days of training or meals.

There is a high level of honor conferred upon those selected to serve as Prefects. Each work over 200 hours of community service in this role and have a dual responsibility to serve on the Boarder Honor Council should it convene.

Everyone at The Bolles School has high expectations of prefects. They constitute the team for Dorm Orientation Weekend, plan events, structure reslife curriculum weekends, design service projects, and counsel peers through difficult times. These responsibilities are well understood by university admissions officers and prefects should plan to highlight their hard work and accomplishments on university applications.
